There is something powerful about listening to women who’ve carved their own paths in automotive. Their stories remind us that success doesn’t always follow a straight line – sometimes the most rewarding journeys start with an unexpected turn.

I recently had the privilege of connecting with three remarkable leaders who are reshaping the automotive landscape: Denise Leleux, CEO of CurbeeSamantha Portillo, Talent Acquisition Manager at D&M Auto Leasing and Jamie Farley, Partner at Performance Brokerage Services. Their candid conversations about triumph, challenge, and transformation offer a fresh perspective on what’s possible in this dynamic industry.

When Opportunity Takes an Unexpected Turn

“I never set out to work in automotive,” Jamie Farley shares, and her words might resonate with many who’ve found their calling through serendipity.
“It was a path I fell into, but it turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to me career-wise.”
A campus visit from Toyota during her time at Indiana University’s Kelly School of Business became the catalyst for an extraordinary journey.
For Denise Leleux, the automotive industry represented a perfect intersection of her passions: leadership and innovative problem-solving. “I love identifying market opportunities and developing strategies that not only solve complex problems but also foster innovation,” she explains. This drive led her to become CEO of Curbee, where she successfully pivoted the company to a SaaS model, transforming how dealerships approach mobile services. But what strikes me the most about Denise’s story is her courage to chase opportunity wherever it leads.
“I’ve moved 13 times across two continents,” she reveals. “My husband even became a stay-at-home dad multiple times to support my career moves.”
It’s a powerful reminder that sometimes out biggest career leaps require a strong support system.

Navigating Challenges with Grace and Strategy

The conversations turns to those moments that test our resolve. Jamie speaks candidly about the subtle challenges women often face in the industry. “I’ve been called ‘sweetie’ in a professional setting,” she shares. But rather than letting such experiences diminish her, she transformed them into fuel for growth.
“I learned that authenticity combined with solid preparation is unbeatable.”
Denise nods to this wisdom with her own approach: “I always try to assume positive intent, ask clarifying questions, and focus on being right at the end of the meeting – not at the beginning.” She shares a revealing moment from her time at Barclays in London, where a discussion about shoe-shine services in men’s bathrooms highlighted unconscious workplace biases. “It was one of the first times I felt different in the workplace – who doesn’t want to give their shoes a quick and free shine?”

Samantha Portillo brings another vital perspective to our conversation.
“The industry isn’t just about cars,” she emphasizes. “It’s about people, innovation, and building relationships.”
Her journey in talent acquisition proves that success in automotive comes in many forms. “When I first stepped into this role, I had to prove why talent acquisition mattered. I focused on building trust – listening, learning the business inside and out, and showing how my role could drive growth.

Creating Paths for Others to Follow

Jamie’s commitment to amplifying women’s voices in automotive led her to launch two groundbreaking podcasts: “Get In Her Lane” and “Driving Performance.” “The connections I’ve made through these platforms have been transformative,” she shares. “Every conversation opens new doors and reveals new possibilities in our industry.” She also speaks passionately about the importance of male allies: “Many men want to support women but aren’t sure how to take the next step. Sometimes, simply asking for support can open doors to meaningful advocacy.”

The Future is Wide Open

Our conversation turns to the future, and the energy in their voices is palpable. “Women have any and every opportunity they want in this industry,” Denise declares. She sees massive potential in areas like EV infrastructure partnerships, AI and automation innovation, and Mobility as a Service (MaaS). Jamie shares a striking insight that should make us all think:
“Women influence over 80% of car-buying decisions. Yet there’s still a significant gap when it comes to women working in retail automotive, owning dealerships, or leading OEMs.”
This disconnect represents not just a challenge, but an incredible opportunity for change.

Wisdom for the Journey

Before ending the interview I asked each leader what advice they’d give to women considering their own leap into automotive.
“Embrace your unique perspective,” Denise urges. “Don’t underestimate the power of your insights – use them to challenge conventional thinking and propose innovative solutions.”
She shares a story from her early career when she wrote a weekend proposal for a leadership role in property development. “I had no experience selling million-dollar homes, but I didn’t let that stop me. I joined associations, took every class I could find, and reached out to competitors for breakfast meetings. Stay curious, think creatively, and be proactive in seeking knowledge.”
Samantha emphasizes the importance of continuous growth:
“Understanding your personality and how to leverage your natural talents is game-changing. Take assessments, seek certifications, and stay current with industry best practices.”
Jamie leaves us with a powerful closing thought:
“Just say yes. Even if you don’t meet all the qualifications, take the leap. It’s not about having the answers upfront; it’s about the journey and the growth.”

Your Journey Awaits

As I reflect on these conversations, one thing becomes crystal clear: the automotive industry is ready for fresh perspectives, new voices, and bold leadership. These women prove that success comes not from following a predetermined path, but from having the courage to create your own.

The future of automotive isn’t just about electric vehicles or autonomous driving – it’s about diverse voices shaping an industry that touches everyone’s lives. Your voice could be part of that future.
