The City of Champaign seeks qualified candidates for a career opportunity as a Lead Mechanic in the Public Works Department. Responsibilities of Position This position involves skilled work in the repair and maintenance of City-owned vehicles and heavy equipment. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: repairing engines, electrical systems, brakes, and rear ends on a wide variety of public works, police, firefighting, and other automotive equipment; troubleshooting and repairing computerized automotive and hydraulic systems; providing leadership in the absence of the Fleet Supervisor within the garage and for fuel site management; and interacting with internal customers and external vendors. Additional responsibilities include participating in City snow and ice and other emergency response operations and call-outs that may require working up to 15-hour shifts at all hours with little or no advance notice. Required Qualifications · A high school diploma or equivalent. · Thorough knowledge of common practices, processes, and materials used in the repair and maintenance of a wide variety of automotive vehicle, heavy equipment, and other engine driven small equipment. · Ability to diagnose and repair various vehicle and equipment malfunctions. · Physical condition and ability to perform the duties of the job, including bending, stooping, climbing ladders, and ability to lift 50 lbs, with or without accommodation. · Valid state-issued driver’s license and good driving record. · Possession of, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of employment, class B Commercial Driver’s License without air brakes restriction and with tanker endorsement. · Possession of, or the ability to obtain within six months of employment, Section 609 Technician certification from the Environmental Protection Agency and Forklift certification. · Possession of mechanic’s hand tools by first day of employment. · Possession of, or the ability to obtain within one year of employment, Class A, B, and C underground storage tank certification Preferred Qualifications · Associate degree in related field. · Ten or more years of work experience. · Automotive Services Excellence (ASE) Automotive and/or Medium/Heavy Truck certifications. · Manufacturer specific certifications. · Heavy equipment/truck maintenance experience. · Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification. · Experience with welding and metal repair and the use of cutting tools. Drug screening will be required. The starting salary is $30.22 per hour plus an excellent fringe benefits package.
